In 2020, we came home to the Northeast. Back to the seasons, and to a 100-acre historic farm in southeastern Connecticut. We fell in love with the land, and while we worked on the old house and Owl’s House, our guest cottage, we let the rest find its way to us.

It found us through a couple in Florida who had bred Texas Longhorns for nearly 25 years. Cattlemen and horsemen we deeply respected. We bought our first bull from them, and in time, much of the foundation of our herd. Cows with size, color and great maternal traits that carried through to their progeny.

What we didn’t expect was what these cattle would teach us. Their uniqueness wasn’t just in their horns or the painted hides. It was in what they made of the land. Their wild foraging made excellent use of marginal pasture, acorns and hickory, and they made short work of invasive woody plants that cover much of eastern Connecticut’s forest floor. They were as good for the land as the land was for them.

That discovery is what drives us at Grijalva Cattle Co. to do more. We breed for genetics that show up top to bottom: horn, color, body, and disposition. Our cattle go to the show ring, to other breeders, and to our customers’ tables. In 2025 alone, we processed more than 28,000 pounds of cattle.

But it was never just about the cattle. It’s about living harmoniously with the land, the animals we cherish and how they bring people here, to meet, to learn and to experience a living piece of American history. The moments worth savoring, brought to life through recipes shared and hand-picked ingredients for our Farm Store at 100 Acre Wood, chosen to pair perfectly with the healthy meats and eggs we raise here. Gatherings that bring people together and a farm stay where guests slow down to the pace of the land, they come back and some become friends.
